Business Day and Deadline Calculator

Count forward from a date in calendar days or business days, skipping Saturdays, Sundays and the Ontario holidays you choose. The count starts the day after the start date. A brokerage must deposit trust money within five business days of receiving it (O. Reg. 567/05, s. 17), so a deposit received on Friday, October 9, 2026, the Friday before Thanksgiving, must be in the trust account by Monday, October 19, 2026. Pick a preset or enter your own dates below.

  • The agreement's own definitions govern. A standard agreement may define business days, banking days and how days are counted; read it, and ask the lawyer when it matters.
  • For trust deposits, O. Reg. 567/05, s. 17 defines a business day as any day that is not a Saturday or a holiday under the Legislation Act, 2006.

How does the calculator work?

  1. Choose calendar days or business days.
  2. Choose the holiday list. List A is the wider list: New Year's Day, Family Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Civic Holiday, Labour Day, Thanksgiving Day, Remembrance Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day, with the next weekday off when some of them fall on a weekend (as set out in O. Reg. 182/17, s. 1.1). List B is the nine public holidays under the Employment Standards Act, 2000.
  3. The count starts the day after the start date. Each day that is not a Saturday, Sunday or listed holiday counts as one business day.
  4. The result shows every day counted and every day skipped, with the reason.

Trust deposits. O. Reg. 567/05, s. 17(2) defines a business day for the trust deposit rule as a day that is not a Saturday or a holiday within the meaning of the Legislation Act, 2006. The trust preset uses List A. Five business days is a ceiling, not a target: when List A and List B give different dates, deposit by the earlier one, and as soon as you can.

Conditions and irrevocable dates. Most agreements set a condition deadline or an irrevocable time as a fixed date and time. Where an agreement counts days instead, use its own wording: it may define business days differently from either list.

Worked example: a deposit at Christmas

A buyer's deposit cheque reaches a Peterborough brokerage on Wednesday, December 23, 2026. Using List A:

DayDateCounts?
1Thursday, December 24Yes
Friday, December 25No: Christmas Day
Saturday and Sunday, December 26 and 27No: weekend
Monday, December 28No: Christmas fell on a Friday, so the Monday is a holiday
2 to 4Tuesday to Thursday, December 29 to 31Yes
Friday, January 1No: New Year's Day
5Monday, January 4, 2027Yes: the latest deposit day

With List B (ESA holidays only), December 28 counts, and the fifth business day is Thursday, December 31, 2026. When the two lists differ, deposit by the earlier date.

Frequently asked questions

Does the day the deposit arrives count?

No. Counting starts with the first business day after the brokerage receives the money. A deposit received on a Tuesday in a week with no holiday is due by the following Tuesday.

Is the Civic Holiday a business day?

It is not a public holiday under the Employment Standards Act, 2000, but it is on the wider list, so List A skips it and List B counts it. For a trust deposit, the safe course is to deposit as if it were a business day, which gets the money in sooner.

Which definition of business day applies to my agreement?

The agreement's own. Read its definitions and, when a deadline is close or the wording is unclear, ask the lawyer. See condition precedent vs condition subsequent and waiver vs notice of fulfilment for how condition deadlines work.
